Sherpa is a misnomer in the Triathlon World. "GSG-Fun Fact Friday."

Sherpa is a misnomer in the Triathlon World!!!   “GSG--Fun Fact Friday.”

In the “tri” world, we often use the word “sherpa” colloquially, to denote a person or a group of people, who in some shape or form, physically help out the person participating in a triathlon, prior to and after the event. Those helping the triathlete, usually carry their bags, gear, bike, and related equipment to the race, hold onto some articles during the race and help them schlep the exhausted triathlete’s stuff back to their vehicle or accommodation after the grueling race.  That’s what “sherpas” do when we watch them carrying mountain climber’s gear when they scale Mt. Everest in those National Geographic or Discovery Channel movies, right?
(Above:Ironman Coeur d'Alene, Idaho----Katie, Erica, Liz and me, Shiggy!!)

(Above: The 4 Ironman-to-be triathletes, along with Patti Paul our wonderful "sherpa.")
(When we did Ironman Coeur d’Alene in 2010, my roommates (Katie Kelly, Liz Bell and Erica Coady) were so incredibly lucky to have Patti Paul as our wonderful, so called “sherpa.”)

Today I was speaking with my friend Heather Krug at an LA Triathlon Club’s “1st Thursday.” First Thursday (FT) is a monthly get together for triathletes, old and new, to chat, hang out, exchange war stories, win prizes, flirt, wear non-spandex clothes and possibly get a date!!!!

Heather was telling me that at the end of the year (December 20th) she was going to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,000 plus feet.)  Heather, along with her friend, and co-climber Robyn, were telling me some incredible details about their upcoming climb.   They hired a very experienced guide (he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro 14 times,) and will also have a personal chef, and a couple of porters.
I asked Heather if she had any “sherpas” going with her to take the 7 days worth of climbing and camping equipment up and down the mountain. Heather told me that they were called “porters” and that the word “sherpa,” that has become synonymous for people who carry gear and such up mountains, is actually a misnomer, because “Sherpa” with a capital “S” is, an ethnic group. I did some research and to reaffirm what she said, Wikipedia states that Sherpa is “an ethnic group from the most mountainous region of Nepal, high in the Himalayas.” (Sherpa is Tibetan for eastern  people.  Shar = east + pa = people.)

So, today's takeaway is that Sherpa = Ethnic group!!!

YAY!!! I loooooove learning new things.

So that’s an interesting fact for “GSG---Fun Fact Friday!!!”
p.s. I’m still looking for a “sherpa” to help me with my stuff for the 2013 Ironman Lake Tahoe.  Please apply for the desirable position:  goshiggy@gmail.com

Here are some photos BTS = Behind The Scenes
As you can see, the "W" on the right hand side of the photo below is, you guessed it, on the door of the "Women's" room.  Yes, yes, we totally improvised.  You don't have to go to a fancy shmancy studio, just in order to get "fashion/glamour" photos. You can be creative, find incredible wallpaper in, y'up, a....restroom of all places and make do with what you have...and thrive!!!!

(Above: I love how Lisa has an expression on her face that says "Are we allowed to take down this piece of art?"

(Above: Lisa, ever so carefully setting down the frame.)

(Above: Lisa checking out her wardrobe in the mirror.)

(Above: Wow, I can't believe we just did a photo shoot in a restroom!!!)

(Above: The very next poem you will write
No. I will not tell them.
They will be only my lips,
Love....

Venice Beach Biennial. Venice Carnival. Hammer Museum. Easter Island. Moai.

Venice Beach Biennial Weekend July 13-15th, 2012
iPhone photos and my YouTube Video below.
Over 87 artists featured with installations.
It's free. Come one-come all y'all.
(Near 19th Avenue/Boardwalk. Venice 90291. Close to Windward.)
UCLA's Hammer Museum is a huge sponsor.
+
Venice Carnival--Windward Circle by Post Office

Come to Venice Beach and bring your whole family, come by yourself, or bring a date!!!
Only 8 weekends left of Summer, so do something "different."

It isn't really the "biennial," of Venice. Every two years in Venice, ITALY they have one of the most prestigious exhibitions in the world, entitled....... "Venice Biennale."  Funky and crazy Venice, California on the other hand, tongue-in check, rips off the title of the show and makes it, its own!!!!

Venice Beach is having art installations and art objects placed around Windward Circle (19th Street/Boardwalk.)

(Video below of Venice Beach "Easter Island" statues AKA "Moai" statues and the Venice Skateboard Park in the background.)

(Above: Video of "Easter Island" Statues, aka, "moai' statues.)

(Don't blink for the camera. I'm touching one of the statues! Easter Island in Venice Beach baby.  As an aside, it is ILLEGAL for tourists to touch the "moai" statues on Easter Island. Easter Island is only 61 square miles and is off the coast of Chile)

(There you go. Eyes Wide Open!!!  The famous steel sculpture in the background.
The "moai" Easter Island statues can be up to 80 tons in weight.)

(Above: I went to Barnes and Nobles after visiting Venice and the "moai" statues and by total coincidence, the cover of "National Geographic" and the feature story was about the "riddle of the moving statues on "Easter Island." Strange? Coincidence? All happened on the start of the Venice Beach Biennial which started on Friday the 13th!!! Spooky!!!)

(An artist is in the process of making an amazing piece of art using sawdust. Y'up, sawdust that has been dyed with acrylic.
Note: The pink VBB (Venice Beach Biennial balloon.)

(Above: Ooga Booga. Not quite sure what is going on here.)

(Above: Some roller skating purple thing on roller skates taking a breather on the yellow sofa)
(Yes, that could be YOU sitting next to me.  The sofa is made out of some solid material, not a traditional "soft" sofa as imagined. Aluminum? Steel? Knock on it and it makes a clanking sound.)

(Above: Notice anything? Two bike frames? Three tires? Yes, the front two forks share the same front wheel. Plus, there are no pedals? Or brakes? Or seats? Or aero bars?)

(Above: a closer look at the front two forks of the two bicycles that shares the front tire?

(Above: Near Windward Circle you'll see about 15-20 stickers on the ground. Each one has a different "thought-provoking" comment. And yes, "When was the last time YOU laughed?")

(Above: The Carnival is here. The Venice Carnivale is here!! This is the famous "Venice/Hollywood-like" sign by Windward and Pacific Avenue.)

AN UPCOMING VENICE EVENT
(Below: So what's coming up next in Venice?)

(Above: Come on down on Sunday August 5th and you'll see the Festival of the Chariots.  You'll see these GIANT chariots with wheels over 6 feet tall.  Hare Krishna's throw orange/gold/yellow marigold flowers to the crowds below. It's a happy and peaceful event. And colorful too.)

ANOTHER UPCOMING EVENT IN VENICE:
Stay tuned for the "Topless Day" in Venice.

Unboxing Video Canon Battery Grip BG-E11 (two battery magazines) Canon 5D Mark III

Unboxing Video of the Canon Battery Grip BG-E11 (2 magazines) for  5D Mark III

(Click below for video)
(Above: Video of unboxing of Canon Battery Grip BG-E11)

(Above: BUY Canon Battery Grip BG-E11)

The Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip is designed specifically for the Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR.
The grip allows for a second battery to be used for double the battery life (not double the power as I said mistakenly in the video.)

The Canon BG-E11 Battery Grip holds two Canon LP-E6 Batteries that doubles the number of shots or video time from the 5D Mark III.  Or, use 6 AA batteries in the included Canon BGM-E11A Battery Magazine. (A black nylon bag is included to store the battery magazine that is not being used.)  You can use just one LP-E6 battery or two LP-E6 batteries in the magazine.

The BG-E11 makes PORTRAIT and VERTICAL shooting much easier as the ergonomics is outstanding.  The Multicontroller/ joystick is great and positioned conveniently when used in the vertical mode.
